I am Peter Howard, a lifelong artist fueled by an unwavering love for painting. Over the years, my focus has gravitated towards water scenes, boats, beaches, and all things nautical.
Finding my creative sanctuary on Waiheke Island in New Zealand, the island's tranquil landscapes serve as a boundless source of inspiration.
The sea holds a profound place in my artistic journey, influencing every brushstroke I make. I find endless fascination in the rhythmic dance of tides, the captivating play of light on the water's surface, and the ever-changing moods of the ocean.

How It Begins
The artistic journey begins with seeking inspiration in the beauty of the natural world. I explore various landscapes and scenes, capturing photographs to serve as references. These images provide insights into the unique lighting, colors, and moods that I want to convey in my artwork.
Back in my studio, I create preliminary pencil sketches based on the reference photos. These sketches serve as the initial framework for the final artwork, helping to establish composition and structure. In the case of life drawings, I often sketch live models, paying close attention to proportions and the intricacies of the human form.
To accurately capture the interplay of light and shadow, I conduct tonal and lighting analysis. This involves a thorough study of the reference materials and preliminary sketches, allowing me to grasp the nuances of the scene. In the case of life drawings, this step involves closely observing the model's pose and how light interacts with their form.
Depending on the project, I may choose to paint outdoors (en plein air) to capture the immediate atmosphere and natural lighting. Alternatively, some artworks are created within the studio, which provides more control over the environment. The goal is to capture the essence of the subject matter with accuracy and emotional depth.
